Retaining Wall for BART Jungle, before Pergola

For my Eagle Project we constructed a retaining wall on the trail next to the pond.  This wall was made in order to address the dirt erosion issue occurring along the parts of the trail adjacent to and due to the BART roads. This wall was 30 feet long and 2 feet tall. We used six, 10 feet long and 1 foot high pressure treated boards. We started off by leveling the trail, removing the dirt that had eroded onto the trail. We then bolted together the posts and half the boards together to make sure the spacing for the holes was correct, also making it easier for the next day to complete the wall. Next we used an Auger as well as a San Angelo bar to make four, 16 inch deep holes, and then filled the bottom up with 4 inches of gravel. We placed the three feet tall 4x6 posts into the holes and made sure they were level before filling it up with concrete post mix and letting it set until the next day. The next day we came back and finished bolting the boards together, using 5/8in bolts, and only had to put the top half of the boards since we did the other the day before. After that we cleaned up our project site and the project was done.

Many scouts, adults and friends showed up to help out during the 7 total hours of work that the project took up on both days. This project required a lot of work and would not have been possible without the efforts of the volunteering scouts that showed up. Many of the younger scouts helped out with tasks like digging up dirt and tightening bolts, while the adults took on the tasks of digging holes with the auger and drilling holes into the posts.
