LESSON 4.  Engineering a Solution

There are many problems in the world.  Scientists investigate problems through different types of experiments and observations, but engineers design different types of solutions.   Engineers try to solve problems for society.  They design structures that allow politicians, builders, and other planners to make decisions for society.   Engineers are the link between science and mathematics.  Design is an important component to the scientific method.

Engineers consider many factors that would allow a product to be used.  They analyze using mathematical skills to see if the design is good.   For example, in building a bridge, an engineer would have to consider many things including the types of materials and how to build them to be safe and sturdy.  They would create exact designs that allow builders to create a structure.  Engineers usually test their designs with computer simulations and real models.
