COMMUNITY IN BRIEF
Science program
gets computer funds FREMONT -- Intel Corp. has given the Math
Science Nucleus $15,000 to provide high school students with
pen-based tablets to use during presentations to elementary schools.
The computers will assist Irvington High School students to develop
programs that will get younger children interested in learning about the
southern Alameda County watershed, as well as seeing an applied use
of technology.
The Math Science Nucleus was founded in Fremont in 1982.
This non-profit research organization is made up of scientists,
educators and community members dedicated to increasing science
education. Contributors to the organization conduct research, develop
educational programs and serve as resources for teachers, parents
and administrators.

Hopkins
Planetarium Receives New Equipment from a Community Grant
The planetarium public show on November 6, 1999 will showcase the addition of it's new equipment. Hatie Hughes of Fremont Bank was so impressed at the outpouring of interest and support at the grand reopening of the Hopkins Planetarium in May 1999 that she recommended a community grant be given to the Math/Science Nucleus for the purchase of new computer equipment.
With a LCD Projector purchased by Fremont Unified School District, the new computer system will be able to project on the planetarium dome images and broadcast sound effects that will enhance the presentations. The computer system was supplied by WBVN, Inc. and engineered by Allen Amaro, from WBVN, to allow the presenter to control the projector with a wireless connection.
The presentation on November 6, 1999, will be given by Dr. Joyce Blueford. It will entertain as well as educate the audience about "The Planets of the Solar System." This show is supported by a group of hard working volunteers. Katie Fisher will operate the Spitz star projector. Eric Klerks will orchestrate the show's music. William Manegold, Chris Tipton-King, and Jonathon Chen will tell intriguing stories about the planets. Some of our other student volunteers are Laurie Chong, and David Chou.
The Planetarium is located at 600 Driscoll Road, Fremont, CA on the Hopkins Junior campus.
