Designing and Installing Hayward Fault Signs

My Eagle Scout project, the Hayward Fault Trail at Tyson Lagoon, consisted of two parts: creating signposts along the Earthquake Fault Trail at Tule Ponds and landscaping the areas immediately around each signpost. The purpose of these signs is to point out important and interesting features of the fault, so as to provide and informative and educational walking experience. In addition, the signs will help educate the many children that take field trips to Tule Ponds.

Digging holes with the auger. It took our team of five to handle to two-person auger!

Staking in the cemented posts for drying overnight

In more detail, I created five signposts along the walking trail. The areas were first cleared of all non-native plant growth, and then the ground was leveled to provide a clean look. On our second workday, we dug large holes using a four-person gas-powered auger and then cemented the posts into the ground. These were staked into the ground to provide extra support during the drying process. Following that, we covered the area with a weed-preventative tarp. As part of the landscaping portion of the project, we created a large rock circle of Lin Creek rocks to surround the signposts, and then filled in the centers with smaller Yuba Quartz rocks.

The work force!

The actual graphics of the signs were created using Adobe Photoshop CS4. I sent these files over to Prismatic Signs, located in Newark, and they were kind enough to help us create some sleek looking, professional aluminum signs. These aluminum signs were glued onto wooden blocks, which were then attached to the signposts. In order to make sure that the aluminum signs stayed in place overnight, we attached four C-clamps to each wooden block and sign.

I would like to give a special thanks to my parents, Anoop and Ritu Khurana, for helping me carry out the project. I would also like to thank my friends for volunteering their time to contribute : Jeff Liu, Max Dornfest, Priyanka Shah, Evan Dankiewicz, Ritesh Ravi, Rohit Ravi, Nathan Ellebracht, Aneesh Saha, and Keenan Grundy. Thank you so much! I would also like to thank Mr. Tim Howard at Prismatic signs for all of his help in creating the aluminum signs, and Mr. Mike Kumar at Innovative Woodworks for helping us cut our wooden blocks perfectly! I would also like to thank Mr. Ron Fong who helped me create the wonderful idea for this project, and for his constant guidance throughout the process. Lastly, I would like to give a big thanks to Dr. Blueford, without whom this project would never have turned out as great as it did!
