Engineers draw plans so builders
can follow instructions

Engineers evaluate a design’s overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety.  This process applies not only to bridge construction but many products including toys, aircraft, computer, and chemicals.  An engineer needs to specialize in one field in order to understand the science and the mathematics required for that subject.

Engineers can also work in testing, production, or maintenance of their designs.   They can act as supervisors in factories, test the product’s stability, as well as investigate why the product fails.  Time study engineers can estimate the time and cost to complete projects.  Some engineers discuss technical aspects and assist in product planning, installation, and use.

Engineers use computers to produce and analyze designs; to simulate and test how a machine, structure, or system operates; and to generate specifications for parts. Computers and robots (that an engineer could design) can monitor product quality and control process efficiency.
