Lesson 4

PHYSICAL SCIENCES –  EQUATIONS OF SCIENCE

LESSON 4.  Cartesian Coordinate System

Objective: Students learn the importance of the Cartesian coordinate system.

Materials:

            worksheet

            ruler

Math Skills:

Slideshow (flash): Integers, Numbers, and Graphs
Slideshow script: Integers, Numbers, and Graphs

Teacher Notes:

Many students do not understand the connection between graphing and how important it is in many technical jobs including engineering, any science, and computer science.  Understanding the coordinates and how to locate one self has applications beyond the graphing.    For example, if you plot data and it gives you a straight line it means there is direct ratio that can help you compare and then predict another point.

The Cartesian Coordinate System is powerful when you understand what the lines mean and how you use them to interpret.  Throughout the other units in Physical Science, we will be using the line graph the most.  So make sure your students understand the reading and the worksheet will allow you to see if students may need more remedial work on understanding graphs.
