Bones can be classified by their shape. This helps doctors to identify bones, but also helps forensic scientists and archeologists to identify different bones when an entire skeleton is missing. There are four major types  of bones including: long, short, flat, and irregular bones. The skeleton is divided into two groups: appendicular and axial.

The appendicular includes all the extremities like the leg and arms. It can be divided into the upper and lower extremities. The lower extremities include the leg bones which are attached to the axial skeletal by the pelvis.

The axial skeleton forms the central axis of the body and is composed of the skull, spinal column, sternum, and ribs. Most of our important organs are protected by the axial skeleton.
