TOOLS

MATERIALS:

graduated cylinders
water

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Lab activity is an essential part of the science learning process. It involves using various, often delicate and expensive instruments. It is essential that all students listen and follow directions precisely. Some laboratory work can be dangerous if directions are not followed exactly. Protective equipment such as safety glasses are often required during the lab periods.

Students will enter the lab in an orderly fashion. They will be assigned specific lab stations. Students must never use electrical outlets or Bunsen burner valves without specific directions from the instructor in charge. Students must follow directions and all safety rules as well as safety equipment such as protective goggles as prescribed by the instructor. Students are required to clean their work stations and return lab equipment to it's proper place before being dismissed from the lab.

PROCEDURE:

Have the students look at the pictures of the laboratory equipment. Put out the array of equipment in your lab. Have the students identify them.

Without telling them the function of each of the pieces, have them write down what they think the function is of each of the pieces and why do they think that.

After lab go over each of the pieces.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES-GENERAL BIOLOGY

PROBLEM: Is laboratory equipment designed for use in the lab?

HYPOTHESIS:_

PROCEDURE:

MATERIALS: different pieces of equipment

Look at the following equipment and experiment with the equipment. Then write down, why you think the equipment was designed in that manner.
